DAZN and Movistar 'vying for Copa America rights in Spain'
DAZN, the international over-the-top sports streaming platform, and Movistar Plus, the pay-television service of Spanish telecoms giant Telefónica, are reported to be competing for the rights in the country to this year’s Copa America, the South American national teams competition.
The two media companies have been in negotiations with Pitch International and Enjoy TV, the two agencies marketing the rights in Spain, according to the Palco23 website.
However, it is thought that the main stumbling block to a deal is the price, thought to be in the region of €1.5 million ($1.68 million), and there are just three weeks to close a deal.
The 2019 Copa America takes place in Brazil from 14 June to 7 July.
DAZN is looking to acquire new content having launched in Spain in February of this year, and the competition represents an attractive proposition given the country’s cultural ties to Latin America, and the likely involvement of top players from LaLiga.
This year’s Copa America will involve the 10 Conmebol members and two guests in Japan and Qatar.
Chile are the defending champions having won the 2015 edition on home soil and a special centenary tournament held in USA a year later.
